Gus Wathen

FISH BIOLOGIST

Gus received his B.S. from the College of Charleston in Marine Biology, his M.S. from the University of Maine in Wildlife Ecology, and has spent most of his personal and professional life working to better understand relationships between fish and their habitat. For the past decade, Gus has taken his expertise gained from conducting studies on juvenile steelhead movement, habitat use, and migratory patterns, and applied it to the design of stream restoration projects. To date, Gus has designed over 75 miles of Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration in streams across Oregon and Washington and has managed over 40 miles of restoration implementation. Gus especially enjoys tracking project progression over time and applying his experience to create better restoration projects for the future. He is also an expert in the design and fabrication of custom instream and mobile PIT- tag detection systems, backpack electrofishers, and fish capture devices that meet specific project needs.

He lives in Bend, Oregon where he enjoys skiing, biking, climbing, and showing his daughters how wonderful a life spent outdoors can be.
